Lathe Improvements

These are some improvements I've made for my Stubby, but they should be applicable to most lathes.

Tailstock storage

Thumbnail There are plenty of times when it's convenient to remove the tailstock on your lathe. So where do you put it? I bolted this simple stand to the side of the legs to hold the tailstock. Since my Jet Mini is next to the Stubby I made it long enough to hold both tailstocks. It's just a pair of 2"x2" rails to raise the tailstocks high enough so they don't rock on the bolts they have on the bottom. I also added a crossbar to prevent the tailstock from walking off the end.

Tool and accessory storage

Thumbnail I am always misplacing my lathe tools while working with them. I made myself this holster so I can keep a few of the tools I'm frequently using near at hand. It's just some 1 1/2" PVC tube with the bottoms cut at an angle to let the chips fall out.

Dust collection

While you can't collect chips at the lathe while turning, you can collect the dust generated while sanding - and there is a lot of it!

I made this bracket so it can fall between the ways of the lathe and be twisted 90 degrees to lock in place. I can now slide and swivel the dust hood to get it right where I want it.
